We are pleased to announce that we will open the doors to another new establishment in May, the second of 2012 so far. Graze Bar, Brasserie & Chophouse is rising from the beautiful building formally occupied by Harry Hare’s in the centre of Cirencester, and is an exciting addition to the growing Bath Ales estate.

The fascinating building, which features an ornate gothic façade, was originally constructed in the 17th century but has been added to over the years contributing to a venue which is now full of character. The site also features a magnificent garden, a real sun trap with mature planting, perfect for al fresco drinking and dining.

Offering great food and drink in a relaxed, vibrant and sophisticated setting, a recipe with proven success at Graze in Bristol, the considered menu will have wide appeal featuring a range of classic dishes lead by meat and fish choices, augmented by a regularly changing and seasonal specials board which will use the best of local produce.

And drinks-wise, alongside an extensive wine and top quality spirit list, you can of course expect to find Bath Ales’ great range of ales and ciders. Graze is essentially our take on a modern pub – somewhere to enjoy a pint of great cask ale, munch on some homemade bar snacks, have a simple hearty lunch or eat a sophisticated meal.

Watch this space for the exact opening date when we will be bringing Bath Ales to fans in the Cotswolds.

To lift your spirits, and provide you with a mere ray of hope (shame we can’t do anything about rays of sunshine), we are announcing the arrival of Summer’s Hare; our brilliant light, hoppy beer at 3.9% abv.

This amber nectar, with a full malt flavour, a fruity bitterness and aromas of spice and summer fruits, this is the perfect ale for summer’s evening spent in one of the many Bath Ales pubs’ beer gardens.

We brew Summer’s Hare using the finest pale Maris Otter floor-malted barley and a mix of Bramley Cross and Chinook hops, which combine to give this seasonal brew its distinctive taste and aroma.

The ‘real’ Richard will also be making special, guest appearances in his full-flight regalia, so take a picture of yourself with squadron leader Richard Dempster, either in 2D or 3D, share it on our Facebook or Twitter before the end of May, and our favourite picture will win a mixed case of Bath Ales beer.

Happy snapping!

Available in 20 litre boxes, so perfect for spring and summertime get-togethers and festivals, Bounders Traditional is a refreshing, clear cider with a crisp flavour and subtle apple aromas. Produced using 100% Somerset cider apples, it is a fine example of our regional speciality.

We would suggest that it might go particularly well with chicken, pasta and lighter dishes. But it is just as delicious drunk on its own.

So the price of a pint in your local goes up again…oh well! The Beer Duty Rise announced in the budget, although widely predicted is unfair to brewers, to pubs, to pub customers, beer drinkers and to all of us …

So the price of a pint in your local goes up again…oh well!

The Beer Duty Rise announced in the budget, although widely predicted is unfair to brewers, to pubs, to pub customers, beer drinkers and to all of us that live relatively modestly and enjoy simple pleasures.

Brewers and beer lovers helping out with the banker’s bonuses, the euro crisis and not forgetting the credit crunch is all very well (glad that we drinkers can do our bit to help re-jig the British economy) but Beer Duty goes up no matter what. Can you remember the last budget that beer duty stayed static – or god forbid – beer duty went down…? No neither can we and we have been brewing for 27 years.

And now we sit proudly at the top of the European League: the most expensive beer duty in Europe – 9 times more thanGermany… *

We would argue that The Beer Duty Rise is wholly unjustified and against a backdrop of excessive Beer Duty rate rises year in year out. What a cop out this Beer Duty Escalator is: 2% above inflation… allowing spineless MP’s – our public servants – to hide behind bureaucracy and remove themselves from the real world.

The Beer Duty increase has been over 40% over the last 6 -7 years and as beer volumes have fallen as the prices have increased, spirits, wine and cider have all experienced volume growth, thanks to a system which puts them at an advantage, and brewers and the pubs that sell beer, are at a damaging disadvantage.

It is blatantly unfair to blame and burden brewers and beer drinkers ALL THE TIME and at every budget…Hiking beer duty is perceived as a quick fix…Well think again Gideon. As consumption drops – it means lower revenue from duty into the Treasury’s coffer, not more – how ironic. All against a backdrop of some well used facts; falling beer sales; record pub closures; importation of illicit booze – how much nobody really knows; a binge drinking culture; anti social behaviour and underage drinking. Blame the brewers – a quick win that one Mr & Mrs Temperance from the Shires.

What is more it is spirits that have become the ‘pre-load’ drink of choice. Wine duty, though linked to beer, has a banded structure that has allowed producers to increase ABV up to 15% with no additional tax liability. The Government seems intent on driving consumers away from beer to drinks with a higher alcohol content, which seems at odds with its policies around alcohol related harm.

Cider duty is less than half that of beer and the disparity between beer and cider tax is nothing less than an invitation to large drinks producers to swap their consumers from one fermented beverage to another. We all know that many ciders are considered ‘loopy juice’ and designed to be binged…

Alcohol taxation iniquities are not just encouraging people to switch from beer to other drinks, they are also driving drinkers out of the pub. Pubs remain the only place where alcohol consumption is supervised by trained staff.

The Government’s policies have been putting at risk the health of the nation.

Currently all alcohol is being subjected to a campaign from the Health lobby targeting all alcohol consumers. Hence the minimum pricing campaign – followingScotland’s lead. This is unfair. Beer should be recognised as a relatively a low-alcohol drink, by and large consumed in a socially responsible environment of the pub. It should be seen as part of the solution to alcohol related harm – not the problem.

The government announced last year a reduction of Beer Duty for lower alcohol beer – 2.8% abv and under but to be frank this was a vacuous response to appease the Health Lobby and to allow the coalition to look as though it knows what it is doing and has responded to the public mood. A cheaper product for lower strength beer, thereby laying the foundations to change the drinking habits of society in the longer term. Time will tell.

Bath Ales has responded in a positive manner to this and we are currently trialling a 2.8% abv beer called Solo. For now available only in cask but designed in the longer term to be a bottle beer.

For now please and for budgets to come…No more Beer Duty rises – they simply do more harm than good. The real problem is successive governments belief that Beer Duty hikes are a quick fix and a long term solution. Wrong. Don’t just think again Gideon. Just Think.
